sansui sp

i have a Nady starpower sp-1 microphone, and it seems to work well when i use a regular xlr to xlr cable to my pa. however, my home recording involves using a sansui Ra-990 reverb amplifier which only has a 1/4 in. input on it. so i got a xlr3f to 1/4 plug today made by Hosa technology. when plugging it into the reverb amp, i'm unable to get much signal from the mic unless i turn up the gain all the way. Even doing this, the cable seems to pick up more sound than the mic does. if i move the cable, i can actually here the sound of the cable on the desk being amplified, whether its plugged into the mic or not, and if i move my hand down the cable i actually here the sound of the squeaking rubber between my fingers being amplified as well. is this just the sign of a bad cable? This is a pretty common problem. XLR to 1/4 inch cables pick up more interference because they are unbalanced cables. An XLR to XLR cable is balanced. The reason you need to turn the gain up all the way on the Sansui unit is because it has a line level input not mic level. The best way to correct this is to buy a cheap mic mixer with a XLR input and then connect the output of the mixer to the Sansui - here is a great little mixer that will work great: The mixer will amplify the mic signal up to line level. http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-502-5-Input-Mixer/dp/B000J5UEGQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1279633685&sr=1-1 Connect the mic to the mixer with the XLR to XLR cable and then connect the main output of the mixer to the Snasui with a 1/4 inch to 1/4 inch cable.
