All Nightmare Long Intro Bass or Guitar? (Death magnetic Metallica) ?
Ok so have played guitar for over 8 years and on the Guitar hero songs you play intro as if it is a guitar riff. But the tone sounds to rounded off to be from any high end tube amp and just from guitar in general. Not even if it was played on high frets on string 5 and 6. And it has what would be horrid fret buzz from a guitar but on a bass that kind of fret buzz seems to add some feel to it and doesn't actually sound bad like electric guitar fret buzz. I need second opinions on this from people who know what there talking about.
When mixing the album, it was over-compressed, and turned up load, which causes clipping and digital distortion if abused, which it was. What happened here is what they call "brick walled". When the audio is brick-walled, it leaves no room for dynamics. There are no "quiet" parts, and there are no "loud" parts. It's just all there. Same volume. If there is a quiet strum on an acoustic guitar, it will be as loud as the most brutal and heavy parts. Also, what happened on the audio of this album is, the turned it up so loud and used so much compression, they had to "cut" out some of the audio. They had to cut out some of the "lows" and "highs", which mostly left the "mids".
The problem is with the mixing, not the mastering of the album. The man that mastered the album has stated that when he recieved the mix, it was already "brick-walled". He said himself that he does not want to be associated with this album.
There is a solution though, even though it is sad that it has to come down to this. Death Magnetic has been released on Guitar Hero III. Me, and many other Metallica fans have resorted to listening to people's rips from this game. The album sounds so much better from this game then on cd. Metallica sent "stems" of their recordings to the makers of the game so they could mix it themselves and put it on the game. If you are not against using torrents, you can find many versions on various sites. Some good, some bad. If you are interested in this, you can message me and I can tell you which ones I like the best. As I have said, they are so much better then the actual album.
Here's a blog by a man named Ian Sheperd. He has many blogs on this subject if you look to the right side of the page. He knows alot about this subject.

Also, right now is an outcry for Metallica to re-mix and re-master this album so it's true potential can shine through. I am very happy with the music, as many of the fans are, but the quality of the audio is ruining these greats songs for so many people. If you agree with all of this, there is a petition going around asking Metallica do re-mix this album. Here is the link.
Feel free to share this with your friends if you so desire.
A website has been created to try to get people together to help fight this "loudness war" which has affected so many great albums. It has gone to far and everybody is tired of it ruining their favorite albums. It needs to stop. There are not many people on this site as of yet, but the more people that know about it, the more that will come and help fight this. Feel free to stop by. The link is as below.
