How can I tell if I have a bad vacuum tube?

I have an old Philco PT-2 tabletop radio that belonged to my grandfather..I am attempting to restore it. It worked the last time it was turned on (around 1991 or 1992) but when I tried it today, I got nothing... All five tubes did light up, but no sound or hum even after 10 mins. or so...Can a tube be bad even if it lights up? Or should I be looking elsewhere for the problem....Please advise...thanks

You might call a local TV repair shop and see if they have a tube tester. In the meantime, check the wiring and make sure there are no broken wires from any of the connections, including the speaker. Not sure what they'll charge you for testing the tubes. Also check the wiring for your volume control as a starter. Also, yes, a tube can light up and still be bad. If you add up the first number of each tube, it should equal 115. All filaments are connected in series for that radio. I believe you have a 50L6, 35W4, 12BA6, 6AU6 and 12BE6. I may be off on some of the part numbers. Good Luck.
