Setting The Gain With Volt Meter On Amp?

I'm about to attempt to set the Gain level for my Alpine Amp. The guide that I'm using states that the reading should be done with the sub unhooked.

Is this because with the sub-woofer working all the readings would be off or is it to protect the sub?

If so should I unhook my speakers as well.

The guide states to use a 60Hz Tone and test with all the head unit eq's flat and with the radio 3/4 full, and turn up the gain until i reach my calculated volts.

My head unit has a small internal amp that my speakers run off of. My sub is the only speaker running off my amp.

i have never been able to get that method to work correctly.
here's how i do it.
1. turn the head unit up as loud as you ever listen to it playing music. set the bass too 0 and any built in eq to off. you might even turn the bass down further to about -3.
2. turn the amp's gain up til the sub ' blends in' with the rest of the music.
3. now listen to music at low and normal levels to make sure that the sub is not to loud or to soft. make small changes if needed to further refine your settings.
