What do I need to look for in repairing an old Zenith Allegra console stereo?
The stereo works great, turn table runs good, speakers and radio are awesome. The problem I have is I get no sound when using the turntable from the needle to the speaker.Even when I rub my finger under the needle there is no sound. Its model number H915AE.I just bought it for only $1.00 and its looks pretty good too. Thanks to all who help.
First check if the source selector is in"PHONO" position. Then lift a little the arm of the turntable and check if you can see the socket of the cartridge where the wires are connected. There must be 3 wires:the shield(that is the ground) and 2 live wires for L and R channels. With a needle in your hand touch the live wire and a hum must come out from the speakers. If so than it means that you need to replace the cartridge. If not there is a bad connexion between the cartridge and the preamp(wires, source selector, electronic component, etc) and you must call a technician!
Good luck!!!
P.S>There is no electric shock hazard if you touch those wires because the voltage on those wires is under 0.1V!!!
