Can you use 12au7 tubes instead of 12ax7 in a Fisher 500c stereo?
I have a fisher 500C stereo from the 60s. I was wondering if I could use 12au7 tubes in it since 12ax7 are hard to get and I had some au7 tubes on hand? The Russian 12ax7's do not last long for me and test all over the scale. I do not trust them
Back to the original question? Can I run 12au7 instead of 12ax7's? I read that the au7 is a substitute tube but I do not want to burn up my Fisher. I have no electronic knowledge.
Any Help thanks
Both will plug into the same sockets and both will work in basically the same way. Depending on the sensitivity of your ears, you may detect a slight distortion, but most people can't tell. You won't damage anything by substituting one for the other. Just a matter of personal aesthetics (whether you find the slight difference to be aurally pleasing).
